Admission Brochure for Doctoral Students in 2026 at the Regional School of National Studies, Northwest University

Northwest University adopts three recruitment methods for doctoral students in 2026: direct PhD enrollment from undergraduate (hereinafter referred to as "Direct PhD"), integrated master's and doctoral program, and regular examination. The selection process will be based on merit, ensuring quality and admitting candidates only when they meet the standards.

Programs and Enrollment Quotas


For detailed information on doctoral programs, enrollment quotas, and supervising faculty that Northwest University intends to admit in 2026, please refer to the Directory of Doctoral Programs for 2026 Admission (available on the official website of Northwest University). The admission ratios for direct-to-PhD candidates (from bachelor's level), integrated bachelor-to-doctoral (BS-PhD) candidates, and general entrance examination candidates will be determined by each college or school based on application volumes. In principle, the proportion of employed,定向 (unit-affiliated) candidates admitted shall not exceed 20% of the total planned enrollment, while the proportion of candidates admitted through the general entrance examination shall be no less than 20%. Northwest University has 5 enrollment slots allocated under the National High-Level Talent Program for Ethnic Minorities in 2026, including 2 slots for faculty members from universities in southern Xinjiang (one each in Mathematics and Business Administration). According to relevant notices from the Ministry of Education, no less than 60% of admissions under this program should be in science, engineering, agriculture, and medicine-related disciplines.

Direct-to-PhD Admission (Bachelor-to-PhD)

Regular Doctoral Admission (General Entrance Examination)


Northwest University adopts the ‌"Application-Review Admission System"‌ for regular doctoral admissions. The term ‌"Application-Review"‌ used in university and school/departmental documents refers to the ‌"General Entrance Examination"‌.‌(1) Eligibility Requirements‌‌Basic Requirements‌ ① Must be a citizen of the People's Republic of China, support the leadership of the Communist Party of China, have a correct political orientation, love the motherland, be willing to serve socialist modernization, abide by laws and regulations, and possess good moral character. ② Academic qualifications for applying to pursue a doctoral degree must meet ‌one‌ of the following conditions: A. Already hold a master’s or doctoral degree; B. Current master’s degree candidates (must obtain the master’s degree before enrollment at the latest); C. Hold a bachelor’s degree for six years or more (including six years, calculated from the date of obtaining the bachelor’s degree to the date of doctoral enrollment) and meet the academic standards equivalent to master’s degree graduates. ③ Physical and mental health must meet the national physical examination requirements. ④ Must provide two written recommendation letters from professors (or experts with equivalent professional titles) in the relevant academic discipline of the applied program. ⑤ Applicants applying under the ‌equivalent academic standing‌ of a master’s degree must have worked for at least six years in a position closely related to their intended major after obtaining their bachelor’s degree, and must also meet ‌one‌ of the following conditions: A. Completed graduate-level coursework in the applied major (with official transcripts issued by the university’s graduate school), and published ‌two academic papers‌ related to the applied major as ‌first author‌ in core journals recognized by Northwest University within the ‌past three years‌; B. Hold an associate senior or higher professional title, and have published ‌two academic papers‌ related to the applied major as ‌first author‌ in core journals recognized by Northwest University within the ‌past three years‌; C. Have received a provincial- or ministerial-level scientific research award (second class or above) related to the applied major (ranked among the top 3 for first prize, or top 2 for second prize). ⑥ Any additional requirements specified in the Admission Implementation Measures for the "Application-Review System" issued by the ‌School of Area and International Studies‌ (available on the official website of Northwest University).

2)Online Application and Qualification ReviewOnline Application ① Application Period: March 1–31, 2026. Candidates must log in to the China Graduate Admissions Information Network (http://yz.chsi.com.cn) to complete online registration, application, and payment. Once the payment is successfully made, the application fee will not be refunded. Applicants are responsible for carefully verifying the accuracy of their online application information. Any consequences arising from incorrect entries are the sole responsibility of the applicant. ② Candidates applying for the "High-Level Talent Training Program for Ethnic Minorities" must additionally submit their application through the Program's online application platform on the China Graduate Admissions Information Network (URL: https://mz.chsi.com.cn/mzjh/stu/). Only after their application has been reviewed and approved online by the provincial education authority of their home region can they proceed with formal registration. Applications not approved by the provincial education authority will be considered invalid. Application Confirmation This stage primarily reviews the candidate’s basic eligibility, the accuracy of application information, and the completeness and standardization of submitted materials. (1)Applicable Candidates Candidates who have applied online for Northwest University’s 2026 Doctoral Program via the China Graduate Admissions Information Network and completed the payment. Applications from candidates who have not paid will be deemed invalid and will not be confirmed. (2)Confirmation Method and Deadline This application confirmation will be conducted by document review (mail-in submission). Candidates must compile all required materials in the order specified below, bind them into a booklet, and mail them (only EMS and SF Express are accepted) to the academic school/institute they are applying to before March 31, 2026. Application materials postmarked after March 31 will generally not be accepted. In exceptional circumstances, the postmark date will be used as the reference. (3)Public Announcement of Confirmation Results In mid-April, the results of the application confirmation will be publicly announced on the Northwest University Graduate Admissions Information website. Only candidates who pass this stage will proceed to subsequent stages such as qualification re-examination and comprehensive assessment. List of Required Materials for Confirmation (templates available on the official Northwest University website): ① "Northwest University 2026 Application Form for Doctoral Program" (signed by the applicant and affixed with a recent front-facing photo; please print on both sides of an A4 sheet). ② Printed "Online Application Information Form for Doctoral Candidates" generated after completing online registration. For candidates applying under the "directed training" category, the section "Opinion of the Candidate’s Personnel Department" must be stamped with the official seal of the personnel (or organizational) department of their current employer. ③ Photocopies of bachelor’s and master’s degree certificates, as well as undergraduate and graduate diplomas; all candidates must complete academic status (degree) verification and provide one of the following: the "Ministry of Education Electronic Registration and Certification Report for Academic Degrees," the "Higher Education Academic Degree Authentication Report," or the "Authentication Certificate for Overseas Academic Degrees" (for candidates with foreign degrees only). ④ Photocopy of valid identification document; current students must also include a photocopy of their student ID. ⑤ "Northwest University Doctoral Program Expert Recommendation Letters" (2 copies; recommenders must be senior-level experts in the applicant’s intended field of study). ⑥ "Northwest University Doctoral Program Political Review Form." ⑦ Photocopies of foreign language proficiency certification documents. ⑧ Candidates applying for the Doctoral Ethnic Minority Backbone Program must additionally submit the "Application Form for the 2026 High-Level Talent Training Program for Ethnic Minorities (Doctoral Level)" (downloadable from the website of the provincial education department) or a screenshot showing approval from the online application platform of the China Graduate Admissions Information Network. ⑨ "Personal Statement for Applying to Northwest University’s Doctoral Program" (including educational background, representative academic achievements, understanding of the intended discipline, and research plan; approximately 3,000 words). ⑩ Representative academic achievements. ⑪ Any additional materials required by the academic school/institute. Note: The above materials are mandatory for the university’s initial qualification review. Original documents must be kept for verification. In addition, candidates must prepare both electronic and physical copies of the materials in the order listed above. The electronic version (a single PDF file) must be uploaded during the "Additional Information" section of the online application. The physical copy must be mailed to the respective academic school/institute by the specified deadline. Failure to submit the required materials or incomplete submissions will result in the application being treated as unsuccessful. If the academic school/institute has additional requirements, candidates must prepare supplementary materials accordingly. Qualification Re-examination Each academic school/institute will organize experts to review and evaluate the materials of candidates who have passed the initial qualification review. Based on the evaluation results, the school/institute will select a certain proportion of candidates to advance to the comprehensive assessment stage. The specific selection ratio will be determined independently by each school/institute.

(3) Comprehensive Assessment‌The comprehensive assessment is organized by the doctoral enrollment working group of the respective school or department. Specific assessment procedures and requirements are stipulated in the "Application-Admission System" Enrollment Work Guidelines and the复试 (re-examination) Work Plan issued by each school or department. Candidates applying with equivalent academic qualifications must take additional written examinations in: (1) Theories of Ideological and Political Education—specifically, for humanities and social sciences candidates: Scientific Socialism: Theory and Practice; for science and engineering candidates: Dialectics of Nature; and (2) two core graduate-level courses in their respective discipline. All components of the comprehensive assessment—including written examinations (including additional tests for equivalent-qualification candidates), interviews, materials review, and ideological and ethical evaluation—are scored on a percentage basis (or converted to a percentage-based system). A score of 60 is the minimum passing threshold. Any candidate who fails to achieve 60 points in any single component will not be admitted.‌(4) Admission‌Based on the assessment results, each school or department proposes a list of recommended candidates for admission. After the university reviews and publicly displays the list without objections, it will be submitted to the competent higher-level authority for admission verification. Candidates who pass the verification will be officially admitted and issued admission notices.

Medical Examination


All newly admitted students are required to participate in a medical examination. Those who fail the examination will have their enrollment资格 revoked. Medical examinations will be conducted uniformly upon student enrollment, and the specific schedule will be announced separately.

Program Duration and Study Period


The standard duration of study is 4 years for both general doctoral admissions and combined master-doctoral programs, and 5 years for direct admission from bachelor’s to doctoral programs. The maximum period of study for doctoral candidates is 7 years (including leave of absence). Tuition Fees and Scholarships

Transfer of Records


Doctoral students admitted as full-time non-oriented (non-employment-bound) candidates must transfer their personnel files to our university before enrollment. No further procedures will be handled after enrollment.

Handling of Violations


Any act of misconduct or falsification during the doctoral admission process—regardless of when discovered—will be seriously addressed by the university in accordance with the Measures for Handling Violations in National Educational Examinations and relevant regulations. For currently enrolled students, the university will notify their home institution, which will impose disciplinary actions in accordance with its rules, up to and including expulsion from school. For employed candidates, the university will notify their employer, which will administer party discipline or administrative sanctions based on the severity of the case. If the act constitutes a legal violation, judicial authorities will pursue legal responsibility; if it constitutes a criminal offense, criminal liability will be pursued accordingly. It is strictly prohibited for any department or staff member within the university to organize or participate in any examination preparation or tutoring activities related to graduate admissions. Currently enrolled students must not organize or participate in proxy testing, cheating, or false promotional activities related to admissions. Staff members involved in the admissions process who have immediate family members or parties with vested interests applying for doctoral programs in the same year must recuse themselves from the relevant admissions work. Violations will result in accountability for the responsible departments and individuals.

Information Transparency and Supervision


(1) In accordance with the principle of "openness, fairness, and justice," the Graduate School will publish on its website key information such as: Admission guidelines for doctoral programs Confirmation results of applications The proposed list of admitted candidates submitted to the provincial examination authority Each academic unit (college/school/institute) will publish on its own website: Admission guidelines Document review results Examination procedures List of candidates invited for复试 (re-examination/interview) Examination scores Proposed list of admitted candidates (2) The Graduate Admissions Office, together with relevant university departments, will supervise the graduate admissions process across all academic units. In the event of disputes during the admissions process, applicants may first file an appeal with the doctoral admissions working group of the respective academic unit. If the dispute remains unresolved, they may further appeal to the Graduate Admissions Office of Northwest University.

Other Matters


(1) Should the competent higher authorities issue new policies regarding doctoral student admissions for the 2026 enrollment year, our university will make corresponding adjustments and promptly announce them. (2) Doctoral admissions at our university are generally conducted in multiple rounds of application and evaluation. Prior to the final enrollment review by the competent authorities, if any college or specialized program still has unfilled vacancies, the respective college may submit an application to the university. The university will then, as appropriate, restart one or both of the "Master-to-Ph.D. Direct Enrollment" or "General Entrance Examination" admission pathways. In such cases, the enrollment announcement will be uniformly issued by the Graduate School.
